I am a big
burrito lover, so much so that having a burrito for lunch on a Friday has
become less of a tradition and more of a necessity, if I do fail to have my
weekly burrito there is a seriously good reason for it, so here is my take on
the best burritos in town so far. I do have quite a few more to explore so I
will be updating the list regularly, burritos not worth a mention wont get one.
1.Freebird – 8/10 - These guys have several street
stalls across London as well as a new permanent residence in Liverpool St. For
me this burrito had a few differences to set it apart from your average chain,
for starters the tortilla has a slight crispness to it which I quite enjoy.
They also have an extensive choice of meat fillings which is impressive
considering they are mainly a street stall outfit. The rest of the fillings are
all good quality fresh ingredients, the sauce… well this makes the burrito for
me, It’s the best I have tasted, it’s much more than just your usual tingle, it
has great depth to it leaving your mouth nicely humming well after finishing
your burrito. On a final note their construction of the burrito was great, it
stayed together well, was compact and the fillings were well layered.
2.Chipotle
– 7.5/10 - The iconic US brand that moved into London in 2010 and now have 6
outlets across London. I have read many unimpressive things about this chain so
I was not in a rush to try it, however when I did I was pleasantly surprised.
They offer a good selection of meat fillings, the rest of the fillings were all
a good standard particularly the beans which I found to be better than most,
the sauce was better than most but not exceptional and the construction was
done well. For me this was an all round good not excellent burrito with one
stand out quality, the guacamole which was very smooth and very tasty.
3.Benito’s
Hat – 7/10 - These guys are fairly well established now having 4 chains
throughout London. Benito’s is my local and staple so I am a probably a bit
more critical of them than others as I have put them through some seriously
rigorous testing, I have to say although they are my local I still want to go
back to them every week as I do love them. The burritos are good but for me
don’t quite match up to some of the others out there, the meat selection is a
bit more limited than most but good quality, the fillings are fine and the
sauce is very average with less depth than most. My pet hate with this place is
that the construction is always 50/50 they let beginners do it sometimes and
when it goes wrong it can ruin the whole experience, they do however have very
friendly staff and a great atmosphere.
Top on my hit list are Luardos, Daddy Donkey and Poncho No.8
all of which I have heard very good things about.
